I've been thinking about getting one of those whitening kits with the trays and the gel. My teeth aren't terrible but they're not bright either. Is it safe to do this at home or am I going to damage my enamel?

My lower right wisdom tooth has been aching on and off for a few weeks. The gum around it is swollen and it hurts to chew on that side. I can see part of the tooth poking through.
